They are all spoken for. Within 10 minutes of opening the order books for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, an electric full-size pickup truck, the first model year is sold out, said Vice President, Global Buick and GMC Duncan Aldred.
GMC opened reservations on October 20 as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV made its global debut. Each reservation came with a $100 deposit. Several thousand hand-raisers were put on a waiting list, Aldred said. Production of the 2022 Edition 1 begins in the fall of 2021 and it is a limited run, but GMC officials will not say how many vehicles that entails.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 Starts at $112,595
All 2022 Hummers are the top-end, high-performance Edition 1 that starts at $112,595. It is only available in white, with black from the beltline [...]
General Motors deemed it a “moonshot”, and those working on the newest GMC model dubbed it Project Obtainium. We know it as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and the freshly debuted pickup includes several interesting tech highlights beyond its wild claim of 11,500 lb-ft of torque that’s been much ballyhooed. There’s a lot to dig into on this EV off-roader, but let’s start by dissecting that torque number before we check out the truck’s trick Extract mode, neat CrabWalk feature, and more.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Put a Torque in It
Let’s start off with that marquis number: 11,500 lb-ft of torque. That is the combined total torque being applied to the wheels, not at the output shafts of the Hummer EV’s three permanent-magnet motors. (Initially, all Hummer EVs will have one front and two rear motors.) GMC is still being coy about the exact power and torque numbers of the individual motors, but chief engineer Al Oppenheiser [...]
Pour one out for McLaren’s line of Sports Series models, because the British brand’s entry-level model’s production cycle is soon coming to an end. In its place, McLaren will launch a gasoline-electric hybrid sports car (possibly code-named P16) built on a new carbon-fiber architecture that’s known internally as MCLA.
While the brand recently teased images of the hybrid sports car covered in camouflage, it may have inadvertently revealed the vehicle in its entirety in a recent patent [...]
Mercedes is finally introducing a proper Bentley Bentayga competitor. The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS goes on sale later this year, and although it’ll essentially cost an arm and a leg, it won’t be as expensive as other ultra-luxury SUVs.
Mercedes is asking $161,550 for the Maybach GLS, which features just about everything but the kitchen sink. Goodies include heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, interior roof-mounted ambient lights, luscious Nappa leather upholstery, heated and cooled cupholders, and a signature cabin fragrance. Passengers in the back get a 7.0-inch tablet to work with, while a wooden parcel shelf separates the main cabin from the luggage area. Buyers can also select a refrigerated compartment with custom champagne flutes. Meanwhile, the exterior is decked out with a chrome grille, retractable running boards, standard 22-inch wheels (23-inch units are optional), and a hood-mounted Mercedes three-pointed star.
Even though the Tesla Model 3 has only been with us for a few model years, it is still a work in progress on the quality control front. But for 2021, the smallest and least expensive Tesla you can buy is getting a host of updates. Tesla quietly updated their consumer site with some of the improvements listed here, but the interior changes were sent to us by someone who works at a Tesla store.
The most notable changes are to the car’s range, and these were in the updates to Tesla’s website. In 2020, the base Model 3 had 250 miles of range and it topped out at 322 miles, while the Performance-trimmed cars were able to go 299 miles on a single charge. For 2021, the base Model 3 now has 263 miles of range, the Performance models can go 315 miles, and the long-range cars see a major bump to 353 miles.

Automakers shuffle option packages all the time, for reasons both obvious and obscure. For the 2021 model year, many changes are coming to the Ford Mustang lineup—and yes, that’ll affect its options. The most notable change is the introduction of the 2021 Mustang Mach 1, a special performance model that pulls double duty and takes over for the Bullitt and Shelby GT350, incorporating bits from both, as well as the Mustang GT Performance Pack 2. With some good comes the bad, however: like the Mach 1’s other parts donors, the Mustang GT Performance Pack 2 is now dead, too.
The changes were discovered on Blue Oval Forums and reported by Muscle Cars and Trucks, and a Ford spokesperson confirmed the discontinuation of the Performance Pack 2 to MotorTrend. And the important takeaway here is that the Mach 1 is going to be the only way you’re going to be able to get the Performance Pack 2 parts on a 2021 [...]
The Honda Civic will get a complete overhaul for the 2022 model year, when we expect to see it gain a new exterior design and a more modern cabin. In the meantime, the popular compact car soldiers on with a more limited menu of options. The sporty Si model is on hiatus (you can still get the full-bore, 306-hp Civic Type R, however), and the two-door coupe is gone for good. Now, we’re learning that the 2021 Honda Civic sedan will lose its manual transmission option, making it the latest legacy Honda product to do so.
The 2021 compact four-door Honda sedan is now on sale, and without its stick-shift option, it is only available with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The base 2021 Honda Civic LX sedan starts at $22,005, an increase of $250 compared to the previous year—albeit with the previously optional CVT included. It also happens to be quite a bit more [...]
Back in 1968, they called them “sporty,” but for the six pack of cars Motor Trend editors tested for the January 1968 issue—the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, and Mercury Cougar—muscle car is now the far more appropriate term. Interestingly, of the nameplates featured in the story we’ve pulled from the MotorTrend archives and recreated below, only two still are still available today, and four of the brands that built them no longer survive.
From MotorTrend Magazine, January 1968
Regardless of when it started—1954 or 1964—the sports/personal market has finally resolved itself, and at this moment, as impressive as its growth has been, the peak is still nowhere in sight. While the rest of the world is strung out on “unification” and “standardization,” the sports/personal cars offer a greater palliate to human nature by “growing” in the other direction, much to the satisfaction of everyone’s ego and identity.
As automakers walk away from sedans as family transportation, it seems ever more categories and niches are being created for the now-omnipresent SUV. Across these multiple sizes, shapes, and price points, we tested the latest models at the 2021 MotorTrend SUV of the Year competition—thoroughly evaluating nearly 30 vehicles in all, with the group ranging from rugged trail climbers and mall-crawling soft-roaders to the fastest zero-to-Montessori rides in the carpool lane. Below, you’ll find our top six finalists for 2021 MotorTrend SUV of the Year plus every other contender for the award. Be sure to check back Monday, October 19, when we reveal the 2021 SUV of the Year!
